Claude Fable 5 is available again

Anthropic redeployed Claude Fable 5 globally on July 1, after the U.S. government lifted the export controls that had suspended it on June 12. It is back in Claude, Claude Code, Cowork, and the Claude API. The return comes with stronger cybersecurity classifiers: when those safeguards trigger, Claude surfaces a notice and can route the request to Opus 4.8 instead. That can happen even on otherwise ordinary coding or debugging work, so “Fable” is not always the model that actually answers.

The redeployment announcement included Fable for up to 50% of weekly usage on Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans through July 7, after which it said access would move to usage credits. Entitlements then changed again: on July 20, Anthropic's status page described Fable as included on Max and fixed an incident that had incorrectly requested credits. The durable advice is to check the current plan dashboard rather than treating either launch allowance as permanent. Mythos 5, the less-restricted version of the same underlying model, remains limited to approved Project Glasswing partners and the U.S. government.

Practical read: Fable is back as the high-end option for difficult reasoning and coding, but the interruption is the bigger signal — access to frontier models can now change overnight because of policy, not just product decisions. And the new fallback behavior means you should log the answering model, especially if you are comparing benchmark runs or paying premium rates for a specific capability.
